Open enrollment is the annual period when you can sign up for, change, or drop your health insurance plan. Outside of open enrollment, you generally can't make changes unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
Key Dates
- ACA Marketplace: November 1, January 15 (for coverage starting the following year)
- Medicare (AEP): October 15, December 7 (changes take effect January 1)
- Medicare (OEP): January 1, March 31 (for current Medicare Advantage enrollees)
- Employer plans: Varies by employer (usually fall)
What You Can Do
- Enroll in a new plan
- Switch to a different plan or carrier
- Add or remove dependents
- Change your coverage level (metal level, plan type)
What Happens If You Miss It?
If you miss open enrollment and don't qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, you'll have to wait until the next open enrollment to get coverage. This could leave you uninsured for months.
Special Enrollment Periods
You can enroll outside open enrollment if you experience a qualifying life event: losing coverage, getting married/divorced, having a baby, moving to a new area, or losing Medicaid eligibility. Learn more about enrollment dates or talk to an agent.
