Medicare covers a lot, but it doesn't cover everything. And even with a Supplement or Advantage plan, there are costs that supplemental insurance can help with.
Most Valuable for Medicare Beneficiaries
Hospital Indemnity Insurance
Especially valuable for Medicare Advantage members. MA plans charge copays and coinsurance for hospital stays that can reach $1,000 to $3,000+ per admission. Hospital indemnity pays cash to offset these costs.
Dental Insurance
Original Medicare doesn't cover routine dental care. If you need cleanings, fillings, or more extensive dental work, individual dental insurance can save you significant money.
Vision Insurance
Medicare covers medical eye conditions but not routine vision care, glasses, or contacts. If you wear corrective lenses, vision insurance typically pays for itself.
Situationally Valuable
Critical Illness Insurance
If you're on Medicare Advantage and worried about the financial impact of cancer, heart attack, or stroke, a critical illness policy provides a cash safety net. Less critical if you have a Medicare Supplement plan (which already provides predictable costs).
Generally Not Needed
Accident Insurance
Less valuable for seniors since Medicare covers accident-related care. However, it can help with out-of-pocket costs on Medicare Advantage plans after a fall or injury. See all supplemental coverage options or learn more about Medicare plans.
